Growing with Quality: A Life Forged in Steel and Standards

“The fastest way to grow is through quality management.” These words from Wang Mengzhe, Senior Quality Supervisor at Wuxi Daming, encapsulate not just his journey but also the core philosophy of Daming’s relentless pursuit of excellence in advanced manufacturing.

Having joined the Daming family in 2006, Wang has spent nearly two decades witnessing and contributing to the company’s evolution. From a young production line worker to a seasoned quality management leader, his growth mirrors Daming’s transformation into a benchmark enterprise in the metal processing and industrial manufacturing sector.

From the Front Lines to the Core of Strategy

“Over the years, I’ve become deeply familiar with Daming’s core processes—slitting, cut-to-length, bending, welding, and more,” Wang recalls. “But the real turning point came when I stepped into the realm of quality management.”

For Wang, quality management is more than compliance—it’s a holistic management philosophy. Drawing on his experience, he summarizes four key pillars that underpin Daming’s quality culture: system construction, process control, technological empowerment, and team building.

1. Building a Robust Quality Management System

At the heart of Daming’s quality strategy lies a structured, standardized system designed around both international standards and customer-specific needs. The integration of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 3834, and IATF 16949 ensures comprehensive coverage across safety, environment, welding, and automotive industry quality standards.

A standout example: In a new energy equipment project, by embedding customer requirements into the management system, defect rates were reduced by 17%, demonstrating the power of structured, tailored quality frameworks.

By charting end-to-end quality flow diagrams and using FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), the company proactively addresses risks in design, procurement, and production phases, preventing issues before they occur.

2. Evolving from “Firefighting” to Preventive Process Control

“Quality issues often lag behind the processes that cause them,” Wang says. That’s why real-time monitoring and proactive prevention are core to Daming’s operations.

Key process parameters are monitored using statistical process control (SPC), and the “Three Presentisms” (on-site, present object, reality) and “Three No Principles” (no accepting, no making, no passing defects) serve as quality cornerstones.

In a power battery box project, implementing standardized control checkpoints and early risk identification mechanisms helped contain problems before they reached downstream production—cutting variation by 30% and reducing defect recurrence.

3. Technology as the Driver: Digital Quality Management

Wang emphasizes the transformative power of digital tools: “Technology is the primary productive force—and Daming is fully embracing it.”

With the MES (Manufacturing Execution System) at its core, Daming uses big data analytics to trace quality deviations to their root causes, such as identifying correlations between tool wear and dimensional inconsistencies.

In a container plate project, advanced data modeling increased the key process pass rate from 92% to 98%, enhancing zero-residue processing accuracy and improving material utilization for customers.

AI image recognition and the Nova steel plate diagonal detection device further empower Daming’s real-time defect detection system, ensuring that only fully compliant products reach the customer.

4. People-Driven Culture: Embedding Quality into the DNA

“Even the most advanced system requires human execution,” Wang says. Daming has built a people-centered quality culture that emphasizes full participation, transparency, and continuous improvement.

Through the Quality Points Assessment System, employee performance is directly linked to quality outcomes—such as self-inspections, customer complaints, and quality violations—promoting accountability at every level.

Cross-functional QC teams are empowered to address complex challenges collaboratively, breaking down departmental silos and encouraging innovation. Meanwhile, layered training programs ensure both frontline operators and managers are equipped with the right tools and mindset.

Annual events like “Quality Month” celebrate best practices, share knowledge through case studies, and foster a sense of shared responsibility through contests, workshops, and awards. Recognitions like the “Excellent Quality Team” stimulate internal benchmarking and help cultivate a mindset of “zero tolerance for defects.”

Personal Growth Through Quality

Reflecting on his 20-year journey, Wang shares valuable lessons for aspiring quality professionals:

  • Be brave in the face of challenges. Embrace setbacks as learning opportunities and take responsibility without fear.
  • Focus on details while maintaining a big-picture mindset. Every detail matters in quality.
  • Leverage collective strength. Quality isn’t a solo pursuit—it’s a collaborative effort across departments and functions.
  • Never stop learning. The rise of AI, digital tools, and new standards means constant evolution. Stay curious and proactive.

“Quality management is not just a discipline—it’s a way of thinking,” Wang concludes. “It requires system-level thinking, data-based decision-making, technological support, and cultural buy-in. Only by uniting these elements can we move from simply meeting standards to achieving excellence.”
