Latest Case Study: Hong Kong S960 Footbridge Project

The world’s first S960 Ultra High Strength Steel Footbridge Quadruple Span Lifting Ceremony was successfully conducted in Hong Kong on July 4, with representatives from the government, steel mills, universities, Daming, and the media present to collectively witness this significant event.

The bridge project is led by the Hong Kong Civil Engineering and Development Department and is situated in the initial phase of the Fanling North New Development Area—specifically, the eastern segment of the Fanling Bypass.

This marks the first instance globally of utilizing S960 high-strength steel in civil bridge construction.

The successful execution of this project has served as a model for future bridge construction endeavors within the construction sector.

Employing S960 high-strength steel can markedly reduce the weight of the bridge structure and the number of foundation piles, leading to land savings, decreased carbon emissions, and enhanced project sustainability.

Moreover, S960 high-strength steel components can be prefabricated in a plant, which significantly cuts down the number of processes performed on-site. This on-site assembly reduces carbon emissions by 35% and shortens the construction period by 40% in comparison to traditional processes, thereby achieving advancements in the project’s speed, quality, efficiency, and quantity.

The project is highly significant and complex, receiving extensive support from government bodies, industry leaders, and academic circles throughout its execution. The technical experimental outcomes provided by steel structure specialists from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Tsinghua University have been instrumental, with AECOM, a leading global firm, overseeing design and construction supervision, while SGS welding and painting engineers contribute to the overall effort, coordinated by Daming Heavy Industry for contract manufacturing.

This represents the first instance in which Daming Heavy Industry has engaged in a footbridge project. In the course of execution, it not only secured the high-quality supply of materials but also offered precise services in cutting, forming, welding, and surface treatment. Throughout this period, it resolved technical issues such as the tendency of high-strength steel to deform and the complexities of the welding process, thus maintaining the project’s progress and quality.

Technical value

By fostering precise collaboration with designers and supervisors from prestigious worldwide companies, Daming improved its technical standards; through cooperation with steel mills, it amassed significant experience in high-strength steel welding.

Management Value

By implementing rigorous standards and encouraging management innovation during the execution of projects, along with facilitating cooperation among teams from industry, academia, research, and application, valuable cross-regional project management experience has been obtained.

Brand Value

The effectiveness of Daming’s “one-stop” service has been confirmed once more, which has extended the range of services offered and increased the influence of Daming’s brand power.

Industry Value

It has promoted the domestic production of high-end materials and the development of the industry, which is the most important factor in the development of the industry. Industrial value: Promoting the localization and application of high-end materials.

Social Value

This represents a strong collaboration between Daming and the HKSAR government, enabling the government to observe the outstanding manufacturing service capabilities of the mainland while enhancing the unity and cooperation between the two regions.

The execution of the Hong Kong Ultra High Strength Steel Footbridge project is a significant milestone marking the 76th anniversary of China’s founding and the 28th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Building on this successful collaboration, Daming will strive to deepen the cooperation among industry, academia, and research, and will continuously improve its technological innovation capabilities,  contributing more effectively to larger infrastructure projects.
