Sailing Forward Together: Construction Begins on Second 7,500 DWT Stainless Steel Oil Tanker

Construction has officially commenced on a 7,500 DWT stainless steel chemical tanker, the second vessel by Daming in partnership with Hubei Jinyu New Energy Shipbuilding. This milestone marks another significant step in the deepening collaboration between the two companies and reflects growing momentum in the specialized chemical and product tanker segment.

The kickoff ceremony brought together key representatives from both organizations, including Hu Zhijun, General Manager of Jinyu New Energy Shipbuilding, and Chen Zhongwei, General Manager of Jiangsu Daming, along with the shipowner and project team members.

During the ceremony, Chen Zhongwei expressed sincere appreciation for Jinyu’s continued trust and support. He highlighted Daming’s expertise in stainless steel processing and its ability to deliver integrated, end-to-end solutions for chemical tanker construction. Reflecting on the success of the first vessel, he reaffirmed the team’s commitment to executing the project safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards, guided by a “customer-first” philosophy.

Hu Zhijun also praised Daming’s professionalism and technical strength. Emphasizing the project’s demanding specifications, he noted that stainless steel chemical tankers require exceptional precision in fabrication, welding quality, and corrosion resistance to ensure safe transport of high-value and often hazardous cargoes. He described Daming as a trusted partner and expressed confidence in further strengthening cooperation to achieve strict quality control, operational safety, and high-performance delivery.

Rising Demand for Stainless Steel Tankers

The launch of this second vessel comes at a time when global demand for stainless steel chemical and product tankers continues to grow. Increasing international trade in specialty chemicals, edible oils, and clean petroleum products has driven shipowners to invest in vessels capable of handling a wide range of cargoes while meeting stringent environmental and safety regulations.

Compared to conventional coated tanks, stainless steel cargo tanks offer superior corrosion resistance, reduced maintenance requirements, and greater flexibility in switching between cargo types. These advantages are particularly valuable in a market where operational efficiency and cargo purity are critical to profitability.

In addition, tightening regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), including rules on emissions and cargo handling safety, are pushing shipbuilders and owners toward higher-specification vessels. Stainless steel tankers are well-positioned to meet these evolving standards, particularly when paired with modern energy-efficient propulsion systems and environmentally friendly design features.

Advancing Technical Capabilities

Building on the successful delivery of the first tanker, this second project represents a new milestone for Jiangsu Daming. For the first time, the company will independently undertake the full scope of processing work, including grinding, cutting, edge planing, welding, and bending.

This transition highlights the company’s continued investment in advanced manufacturing technologies and process integration. Stainless steel shipbuilding, especially for chemical tankers, demands strict control over heat input during welding, surface finishing quality, and dimensional accuracy. Even minor deviations can impact corrosion resistance and long-term structural performance.

By bringing these processes in-house, Daming not only improves quality control and production efficiency but also strengthens its competitiveness in high-end shipbuilding supply chains. The move positions the company to support more complex vessel types and larger-scale projects in the future.

Strengthening Industrial Collaboration

The partnership between Daming and Hubei Jinyu New Energy Shipbuilding reflects a broader trend in China’s shipbuilding industry toward specialization and collaboration. As vessels become more technologically advanced, shipbuilders increasingly rely on strategic partners with deep expertise in specific materials and processes.

Jinyu New Energy Shipbuilding, with its focus on modern and environmentally friendly vessel construction, complements Daming’s strengths in stainless steel processing. Together, the two companies are building a cooperative model that emphasizes efficiency, quality, and innovation—key factors in competing in the global shipbuilding market.

Looking Ahead

A highlight of the ceremony came when Hu Zhijun officially initiated the cutting equipment, marking the formal start of construction. The event concluded with a group photo of all participants in front of the production line.

As work begins, both teams share strong confidence in the project’s successful delivery. Beyond the vessel itself, the project symbolizes a deepening partnership and a shared commitment to advancing technical excellence in the chemical tanker sector.

With global shipping continuing to evolve toward higher efficiency, stricter environmental compliance, and greater operational flexibility, projects like this 7,500 DWT stainless steel chemical tanker underscore the importance of innovation and collaboration. For Jiangsu Daming and Hubei Jinyu New Energy Shipbuilding, it is not only a continuation of a successful partnership—but also a step toward capturing new opportunities in the next generation of specialized vessels.
